by indymediaitalia Monday, Jul. 23, 2001 at 10:37 AM mail:

Iranian manifestation against Kathami's regime.

Manifestazione Iraniana, p.zza Tommasei, h.11 a.m
Manifesti e bandiere, uomini impiccati e torture (manichini).

Please explain!
by x Friday, Jul. 20, 2001 at 2:29 AM mail:

OK to protest against the 1000 public executions, of course
this must be opposed.

But surely the aim should be to protest against *Khameini* and
the religious leaders who hold important powers? Agreed,
Khatami has compromised a lot, but there's only a limited margin
of manoeuvre for any elected politician. Agreed, the groups
supporting Khatami should be a diverse group supporting
women's rights, workers' rights, elimination of the death penalty,
gay/lesbian rights, environmental rights, etc. without letting
any leaders dominate.

But in the short term, supporting Khatami would seem, maybe
naively, to be the best tactic.

Could you explain to us why opposing Khatami does not play
into the hands of the religious right in Iran, as a tactical question?

Shukriyan.

Agreed: we should protest against the death penalty in Iran.

Agreed: It's not enough for Iran to move from domination by a
religious elite to domination by capitalists in a limited (western)
form of democracy: the best thing would be to have environmental
groups, workers' rights groups, women's rights groups, gay/lesbian
rights activists, etc in Iran all coordinate together in a non-hierarchical
way to combat both (1) Khameini and the constitutional power of the
ayatollahs and (2) Khatami who we can guess is going to or already
has supported multinationals moving in to Iran.

But: is "opposing Khatami" a good tactic in the short term?
Shouldn't you at least "oppose both Khatami and Khameini"?

If you have specific information and links betwen Khatami and
the multinationals (or WB/IMF/WTO) that the "movement" wishes
to combat, then please post them!

Shukriyan.

Let's be precise
by Zarrebin Friday, Jul. 20, 2001 at 10:44 AM mail: jrhfans@excite.com

The people who protested against Khatami are themselves a terrorist organisation who were forced out of Iran after they killed an entire Cabinet that was voted into office legitimately by the Iranian people. They omitted to explain that Khatami himself has no power whatsoever over the judiciary in Iran, and he has always called for an impartial and rule-observing judiciary. While Khatami allies control all the elected levers of the Iranian state, and their reforms are well-greeted by the people of Iran, conservatives and right-wingers keep hold of the judiciary.
To protest against Khatami, who last month recived the vote of 79% of the voters (around 55% of the entire voting population, compared to Tony Blair who got only 24% and Bush who got around 20% of the entire voting population), is utterly meaningless. These terrorist opposition figire (the MKO or Mojaheddin-e Khalq) managed to successfully conceal these facts, thanks to the general ignorance surrounding Iranian politics.

OK, it does seem like the MKO or PMOI is a US-supported +
Saddam Hussein-supported armed opposition group:

http://www.comebackalive.com/df/dplaces/iran/player6.htm

and it does seem that they use violence against the Iranian State:

http://www.web.amnesty.org/web/ar2001.nsf/webmepcountries/IRAN?OpenDocument

> The People's Mujahideen of Iran (PMOI) continued to

...

During what epoch (approx) did they kill the Cabinet?
Before the Shah? During Khomeini's time? Recently?

Protesting against someone in a dominant position is
never meaningless. It might be a bad tactic or silly,
but mono-think and concentration of power are
rarely a good idea.

Moreover, given such a massive vote in favour of Khatami,
surely now is the best time to get rid of human rights
violations such as the death penalty.

The members of the MKO/PMOI have the right not to be
executed and not to be tortured.

You're surely not justifying the death penalty as a way of
opposing "terrorists"?

In any case, are all the Iranians who demonstrated in Genoa
really PMOI supporters? Might they not have... individual,
diverse opinions?

More reports (neither for nor against Khatami, neither for
nor against the MKO/PMOI):

nazismo musulmano
by angelo Wednesday, Jul. 25, 2001 at 4:48 PM mail:

To be precise....
by zarrebin Tuesday, Jul. 24, 2001 at 3:32 PM mail:

once again, there is BIG confusion over what is going on in Iran.
m just quotes Amnesty International for everything concerning Iran, despite the fact that Amnesty has not been operating in Iran for the last 15-20 years and anything that Amnesty publishes is at least "second hand"
m doesn't seem to recall that the MKO killed two successsive Iranian cabinets (the Bahonar and the Beheshti cabinets) AFTER the revolution, when they had poor electoral results that led to a split between the MKO and the Khomeini camp and to a return of guerrila and terrorist actions by the MKO. To date, the MKO performs at least 50 terrorist attacks inside Iranian territory every year, and in 1988, after the ceasefire was proclaimed between Iran and Iraq, they invaded Iran with Iraqi connivance, and hope to ignite another bloody and endless conflict.
Khatami was never a member of the "inner circle" of Iranian politics. He was dismissed form his job as Culture Minister for being too reformist and allowing the great Iranian cinema, that of Kiarostami, Panahi and Makhmalbaf, to flourish. He became President after being derided as a joke candidate by the establishment. He has written several books declaring his admiration for the western Liberal values upheld by Tocqueville and Locke. He himself has tirelessly and against a barrage of conservative opposition, campaigned for the rule of law and free press, as the blossoming of independent newspapers a couple of years ago in Iran have witnessed. Again, please note that over 55% of the Iranian voting population (not those who actually went and cast their ballots, but the people who are REGISTERED to vote) have directly supported him.
Western opposition to Khatami derives from a profound ignorance of who are the main movers in the Iranian Republic. The conservatives, who hold almost all unelected positions and the judiciary, are the "bad guys". Neither Khatami nor his cabinet nor the elected Majles are worthy of your inaccurate and general comments. Please, all of you, make yourself up to date and, in the spirit of this excellent website, indymedia, judge independently, and accurately.
