U.K. bombers enter Israel

The terrorists who carried out the suicide bombing
at Mike's Place in Tel Aviv on April 29 crossed
from Gaza into Israel with the aid of an Italian
journalist, according to details of the
investigation revealed Monday following the
lifting of a court-imposed gag order.



The bombing, which killed three people, was carried out by a
British citizen of Pakistani origin, Asif Mohammed Hanif.
His accomplice, Omar Khan Sharif, also a British national
of Pakistani origin, fled when his explosive device failed to
detonate. His body was found two weeks later in the sea off
Tel Aviv coast. It is not known whether his death
was accidental, due to exhaustion or whether he
drowned himself deliberately.

According to the details released for publication
by the Tel Aviv District Court, Hanif and Sharif
were recruited by the militant Hamas organization
in Damascus, where they had studied before coming
to Israel.

The two traveled to Israel via Jordan, crossing
the Allenby Bridge on April 12, and then
proceeded to travel throughout the country, as
well as the West Bank and Gaza, without
hindrance. In Gaza, they finalized plans for the
attack with Hamas leaders in the Strip and
created a "cover" for themselves by posing as
left-wing activists and attending events
sponsored by the International Solidarity
Movement.

The biggest problem they faced was how to cross
from Gaza back into Israel once they were ready
to carry out the attack. They solved this problem
with the aid of an Italian journalist, who
offered them a ride through the checkpoint in her
car together with some other Italian journalists.


At the time, foreign journalists were allowed to
pass through checkpoints virtually without
inspection, so this assistance enabled the two to
slip through undiscovered. It is because of this
incident that Israel has since tightened the
rules for foreign journalists and now insists on
subjecting them to checkpoint inspections.

The Italian journalist was interrogated by the
police and the Shin Bet security service, but
apparently had no idea that the two were
terrorists. She has since left the country. The
left-wing activists with whom Sharif and Hanif
spent time in Gaza have also been interrogated,
and some have been deported. But they also appear
to have been unaware that the two were
terrorists.

Contrary to the security services' initial
assessment, Hanif and Sharif apparently did not
bring their bombs with them when they came from
Jordan. Shortly after the attack, Defense
Minister Shaul Mofaz had announced that the
explosives were smuggled through the Allenby
Bridge crossing in a Koran.

After further investigation, however, the security
services have concluded that the two probably
obtained the bombs in Gaza. The scanners at the
Allenby Bridge are highly sophisticated and would
almost certainly have detected any explosives; it
would have been much easier to get a bomb past
the less sophisticated scanners at the Erez
checkpoint from Gaza into Israel.

Another initial assessment that further
investigation seems to have refuted is that the
attack was aided by an international terrorist
organization, such as Hezbollah or even Al-Qaida.
The official statement released last night said
merely that the security services have been
unable to prove any international involvement,
but the unofficial conclusion is that the bombing
was apparently a homegrown production by Hamas in
Gaza. The mastermind was probably Mohammed Def,
who heads Hamas's military wing in the Strip.

Hanif and Sharif spent most of their time in Tel
Aviv at a small hostel called Hayarkon 48 on
Hayarkon Street. According to the proprietors, it
may be there that they obtained the idea of
making Mike's Place their target: During several
days of their stay, a large poster prominently
displayed on the lobby bulletin board invited
hotel guests to musical evenings at the nearby
pub.

The hotel's owner, Omri Gur-Lavie, said the two
never aroused any suspicions in the hotel staff.
"After all, they presented British passports and
spoke perfect English," he said. "There was not a
hint of Arabic, other than their names."

But Sharif evidently stopped seeming innocent
after he discovered a problem with his explosive
belt en route to the attack and decided to turn
back, leaving Hanif to carry out the bombing
alone.

The attack on Mike's Place will be remembered as a
dismal failure on the part of the security
services, which failed to detect anything
suspicious either when the terrorists entered
Israel or at any of their numerous border
crossings between Israel and the territories. As
a result of this failure, security has been
tightened at the Erez checkpoint and more
stringent checks are being performed on left-wing
activists and Palestinians with foreign passports
who try to enter Israel.

LONDRA - Nelle ultime 24 ore Israele ha espulso una giornalista italiana, accusandola di avere aiutato, anche se inconsapevolmente, due terroristi stranieri a entrare nel suo territorio. La televisione di Gerusalemme ha annunciato la notizia ieri a tarda sera, senza precisare l'identità della donna. Il mese scorso la giornalista avrebbe dato un passaggio a bordo della sua auto - senza conoscere le loro segrete intenzioni - ad Asir Mohammed Anif e Omar Khan Sharif, i due cittadini inglesi di origine pakistana e religione musulmana autori dell'attentato del 29 aprile sul lungomare di Tel Aviv, in cui persero la vita tre persone e ci furono oltre sessanta feriti.

Apparentemente i due kamikaze avrebbero approfittato del passaggio per penetrare in Israele dalla striscia di Gaza, afferma la televisione, sostenendo che a bordo dell'auto potevano esserci "altri colleghi italiani" della donna. Era già noto che a Gaza i due anglo-pakistani avevano partecipato a riunioni dell'International Solidarity Movement (Ism), un'organizzazione di volontari che fanno da "scudi umani" ai palestinesi per denunciare l'occupazione israeliana. La tivù riferisce che anche alcuni pacifisti stranieri sarebbero stati espulsi insieme alla "giornalista" italiana.

Le poche informazioni lasciate filtrare sinora da polizia e Shin Beth (il servizio anti-terrorismo israeliano, che ha interrogato la donna prima di approvare il provvedimento di espulsione, inducono a credere che anche lei fosse un membro o simpatizzante dell'Ism, e praticasse la professione di giornalista come "free-lance", senza contratti fissi con alcuna testata italiana. In genere, infatti, i corrispondenti stranieri accreditati permanentemente in Israele non usano la propria auto per entrare o uscire da Gaza, ma si servono di taxi all'interno e all'esterno della striscia, passando il confine a piedi in modo da evitare i lunghi controlli a cui solitamente le guardie di frontiera sottopongono gli autoveicoli in transito per verificare che non nascondano armi o esplosivo.

In ogni caso si sapeva che i due kamikaze inglesi si erano fatti passare per pacifisti nei giorni trascorsi a Gaza, dove avevano preso parte alle commemorazioni indette dall'Ism per ricordare una militante americana del gruppo uccisa da un bulldozer dell'esercito israeliano. "Non avevamo idea che fossero terroristi in procinto di compiere un attentato", hanno dichiarato in seguito i portavoce del movimento.

Secondo il quotidiano israeliano Ha'artez sarebbe stata una «giornalista italiana» ad aver aiutato «senza saperlo» i kamikaze che il 29 aprile si fecero esplodere nel bar "Mike's Place" di Tel Aviv. L'edizione on-line del giornale israeliano ha citato dettagli dell'inchiesta fino a ieri coperti dal segreto, tornando sulla misteriosa vicenda dei due terroristi con passaporto britannico responsabili di un attentato in cui morirono tre persone, Asif Mohammed Hanif e Omar Khan Shanif. Il secondo non riuscì a far esplodere la carica che portava addosso e il suo corpo fu trovato diverse settimane, in circostanze a dir poco sospette, al largo della costa di Tel Aviv. I due kamikaze arrivati a Gaza ebbero da Hamas gli ordini per l'attentato e le istruzioni per mischiarsi agli attivisti filopalestinesi. Per superare il proproblema più grosso - tornare da Gaza in Israele - secondo le indiscrezioni del giornale - li avrebbe aiutati una giornalista italiana, la cui identità non è stata resa nota, che offrì loro un passaggio a bordo della sua automobile. Scene di normale occupazione nei Territori palestinesi, nonostante Sharm el-Sheikh e, oggi, Aqaba. Un agente palestinese dell'Anp, Nasser Abdel Qadr Bakr di 47 anni, è stato ucciso ieri mattina a Beit Hanoun (Gaza) da colpi sparati da soldati israeliani, un ragazzo di 16 anni è morto a Tulkarem per le ferite riportate negli scontri dei giorni precedenti, un altro è morto dopo essere stato ferito dai militari israeliani a Alm Gazi; dodici giovani palestinesi sono stati feriti a Nablus, alcune case sono state demolite a Tulkarem, i carri armati sono tornati a Jenin e a Bethlemme, dove è tornato il coprifuoco. Sempre sotto coprifuoco Ramallah - motivato da Israele per i «vertici di Sharmel-Sheikh e Aqaba» - dove resiste sotto assedio - proprio ora che la «road map» da lui approvata per primo, sembra convincere gli Usa - il presidente palestinese Yasser Arafat. Un gesto di buona volontà è stata invece la liberazione di Ahmed Abu Sukkar, detenuto palestinese in carcere da 27 anni - condannato all'ergastolo per un attentato del `76 che costò la vita a 14 persone. Non è una novità la «liberazione» di 80 detenuti palestinesi: era solo scaduta la detenzione preventiva. Restano nelle prigioni di Israele - a cominciare dal leader dell'Intifada Marwan Bargouti - ben 7mila prigionieri palestinesi. Intanto una giornalista freelance italiana, appena tornata in Italia da Israele, ha smentito ieri di esser stata espulsa da Israele, dicendosi del tutto estranea alla vicenda dell'attentato ad un pub di Tel Aviv compiuto da un kamikaze cittadino inglese di origine pakistana lo scorso primo maggio. Diversi giornali e agenzie avevano riportato la notizia, trapelata a Gerusalemme, del coinvolgimento di una «giornalista italiana» che avrebbe inconsapevolmente aiutato gli attentatori a passare un confine rigidamente sorvegliato, dando loro un passaggio in auto. «Non mi è stata mossa alcuna accusa dalle autorità israeliane, non ho auto né patente, sono appena tornata da Israele che visito spesso per lavoro e da dove non sono stata affatto espulsa», ha detto alla Reuters Patrizia Viglino, 37 anni, giornalista e fotografa di Bologna che collabora con diverse testate tra le quali Liberazione. Il suo nome è incredibilmente, quanto irresponsabilmente, comparso su un sito online italiano, a margine della notizia che riguardava la vicenda in Israele.

ISM Demands Israeli Retraction and Apology over Mike's Place Bombing Allegations

The International Solidarity Movement demands a retraction of statements made by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a full apology.



The Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs website makes the following accusations against the International Solidarity Movement (ISM).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that "ISM members take an active part in illegal and violent actions against IDF soldiers. At times, their activity in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip is under the auspices of Palestinian terrorist organizations". This is incorrect. The International Solidarity Movement does not and has never worked under the auspices of, or in cooperation with, any armed Palestinian resistance group. The ISM does not undertake any activity in the Occupied Territories this is violent or illegal. On the contrary ISM activists have been harmed by and threatened with harm by Israeli army personnel.

In connection with the two British suicide bombers the Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that "The two terrorists were careful to establish their presence in Judea and Samaria by forging links with foreign left wing activists and members of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM)". This is incorrect. No ISM activist had contact with the two men in the West Bank. Their sole contact was a brief social encounter in Rafah in the Gaza Strip and no "links" were "forged" in short time. See attached press statement for full details.

Immediately after the suicide attack on Mike's Place Israeli intelligence stated that the men had entered the Gaza Strip posing as international peace activists with the ISM. In their report of June 3 Israeli investigations now prove that "On April 24, 2003, the terrorists entered the Gaza Strip via the Erez checkpoint, along with the Italian woman journalist and additional Italian journalists, which greatly assisted them in avoiding suspicion at Erez". The ISM has been shown to be innocent of this false accusation by the Israeli government.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that "It has become clear from the investigation of the Italian journalist that the terrorists exploited foreign left wing activists in the Palestinian Authority (PA) areas for the purpose of covering their movements throughout Judea, Samaria and Gaza. Even though the latter were unwitting, they in effect were accomplices to terrorist activity". This is incorrect. The Italian journalist was interrogated by the Israeli authorities and has subsequently been found to be unaware of their intentions and so is not guilty of being an accomplice. Similarly the ISM activists in Rafah were entirely unware of the men's intentions to commit an attack in Israel. Moreover ISM has not been approached for questioning by the Israeli authorities in connection with the contact they had with the suicide attackers. Further to this the only contact ISM had with these men was a brief social meeting in Rafah, not in the West Bank and it has been proved that the men used a journalist as a cover for their movements. It is important to state that since it's founding ISM activists have been denied entry to the country and many have been deported. Moving around the Occupied Territories is not made easier as a peace activist.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that "None of the persons involved - neither Palestinian nor foreign - bothered to contact any official body, despite their familiarity with the terrorists, even after they understood that they were involved in the attack, until they came under ISA investigation." This is incorrect. ISM held an open press conference a few days after the attack on Mike's Place and explained the circumstances under which the activists in Rafah briefly met the British men. The ISM has never been approached by the Israeli authorities in connection with an investigation.

Details of April 30, 2003 Tel Aviv suicide bombing

On April 30, 2003, a suicide terrorist blew himself up at the entrance to Mike's Place, a pub/cafe on the Tel Aviv promenade. Three civilians were murdered, and over 50 were wounded in the attack.

The attack was perpetrated by Asif Muhammad Hanif, 22, a British citizen.

A second British citizen, Omar Khan Sharif, 27, married, a resident of Derby, who was also due to have perpetrated a suicide attack, fled the scene. Khan Sharif attempted to detonate the bomb in his possession but the bomb failed to explode. He fled the scene after discarding the bomb. It cannot be ruled out that he was injured by the explosion of the detonator. During his flight, Khan Sharif struggled with a security guard at the David Intercontinental Hotel as he tried to snatch the latter's ID. Khan Sharif's body was positively identified on May 19, 2003, after having washed ashore on the Tel Aviv beachfront on May 12.

Asif Muhammad Hanif's bomb was composed of standard explosives.

The two terrorists reached the scene of the attack from a nearby hotel, in which they had rented a room several hours earlier. Several days earlier, they had spent one night in the same hotel.

Hamas and Fatah's Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades have claimed joint responsibility for the attack.

Prior to the attack, the Israel Security Agency (ISA) had received general, unfocused, information that was taken seriously and upon the basis of which, a working assumption was made that a terrorist attack, to be perpetrated somewhere in the center of the country, was being planned. Despite expedited and varied security measures, the security forces were unable to prevent the attack.

Immediately after the attack, the ISA - in cooperation with the Israel Police - began an accelerated and ramified investigation.

An examination of the unexploded bomb discarded by Omar Khan Sharif showed that it had been hidden in a book and contained standard explosives.

A search of the terrorists' hotel room revealed an elastic belt, explosives and a map of the center of Tel Aviv, on which several crowded locales - including Mike's Place - were clearly marked

April 12, 2003 - Entry from Jordan, via the Allenby Bridge. The two passed through the security checks. (The treatment of the two terrorists at the Allenby Bridge is currently under investigation by the ISA and other relevant bodies.)
April 14, 2003 - Hebron; visit to the Tomb of the Patriarchs.
April 15-20, 2003 - Gaza Strip.
April 20, 2003 - Stayed in Jerusalem hotel.
April 21, 2003 - Stayed in hotel near Tel Aviv promenade.
April 22-23, 2003 - Ramallah.
April 23-24, 2003 - Nablus.
April 24-29, 2003 - Gaza Strip.
April 29, 2003 - Entered Israel a few hours prior to the attack.
The two terrorists were careful to establish their presence in Judea and Samaria by forging links with foreign left wing activists and members of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM).

ISM members take an active part in illegal and violent actions against IDF soldiers. At times, their activity in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip is under the auspices of Palestinian terrorist organizations.

Foreign left wing activists, especially ISM members, who seek entry into Israel, often do so under false pretenses, via cover stories - entry for matrimonial, tourist, religious and otherr purposes - which they coordinate prior to arriving in Israel.

Nasif Diekh, a resident of Naama in the Binyamin area, was arrested and admitted that the two terrorists - with whom he was previously unfamiliar - had asked him, one week prior to the attack, to help them volunteer at the medical center in Ramallah where he was employed. Diekh gave them lodging at the center. Diekh said that the two terrorists had been driven from Ramallah to Nablus by a female Italian journalist and left wing activist.

The Italian journalist - who was detained for questioning on May 4, 2003 - said that on April 23, 2003, she had indeed driven the two terrorists to Nablus. The terrorists told her that they had arrived to study the situation of the Palestinians. The two toured a medical center and a school. In the evening, they returned to Ramallah; the journalist arranged that they would travel to the Gaza Strip the following day.

On April 24, 2003, the terrorists entered the Gaza Strip via the Erez checkpoint, along with the Italian woman journalist and additional Italian journalists, which greatly assisted them in avoiding suspicion at Erez. During their stay in the Gaza Strip, they visited Rafiah and Khan Yunis and met with activists from the various organizations in the Gaza Strip.

After the visit to Gaza, the Italian woman journalist returned to Jerusalem. After the attack, she understood that it was the terrorists who had perpetrated the April 30, 2003 attack who had traveled with her, but made no mention of this to any official body.

None of the persons involved - neither Palestinian nor foreign - bothered to contact any official body, despite their familiarity with the terrorists, even after they understood that they were involved in the attack, until they came under ISA investigation.

It has become clear from the investigation of the Italian journalist that the terrorists exploited foreign left wing activists in the Palestinian Authority (PA) areas for the purpose of covering their movements throughout Judea, Samaria and Gaza. Even though the latter were unwitting, they in effect were accomplices to terrorist activity. This fact requires the security forces to reexamine the issue of the presence of foreign left wing activists and non-governmental organizations in the PA areas in light of the possibility that they are being exploited for terrorist purposes.

The ISA, Israel Police and other security bodies, both in Israel and abroad, are continuing to conduct a sensitive, complex and wide-ranging investigation.

There are additional details which the ISA is not at liberty to divulge lest this impair the ongoing investigation.

The fact that the attack was perpetrated by a foreign national, and that another foreign national was supposed to have perpetrated an additional attack, sharply raises the issue of how to deal with the involvement of foreign nationals - citizens of friendly countries - in terrorist activity designed to maim and murder innocent civilians. This was not the first time that the State of Israel has been the target of foreign terrorists bearing British passports.

This is one of the most disturbing and complicated issues to deal with from a security-intelligence point-of-view, due to the fact that no Western country is capable of providing an effective answer without the full cooperation of all countries that are threatened by Islamic fundamentalist terror.

Due to the seriousness of the threat, as reflected in the April 30, 2003 attack, the entry of foreign nationals into the State of Israel - both via Erez checkpoint and the international crossings - is being reexamined.

Una collaboratrice di Vita nel mirino di Ma'ariv, ecco come sono andate le cose

L'Associazione della Stampa estera accreditata in Israele (Fpa) aveva giustamente avvertito ieri, come riferito dall'Ansa, “dell'uso che funzionari governativi israeliani stanno facendo di queste accuse per calunniare la stampa estera in generale e diffondere false accuse di parzialità a favore dei palestinesi”. Detto fatto, il capo dell'Ufficio stampa governativo, Daniel Seaman, ha oggi confermato che d'ora in poi le procedure per l'accredito in Israele “verranno riviste in senso ulteriormente restrittivo”.
Il caso dei giornalisti italiani e di Francesca Ciarallo che funzionari governativi e giornalisti israeliani accusano di complicità con kamikaze, hanno suscitato in queste ore ad arte sarebbe inspiegabile se non nel contesto di un ulteriore tentativo di restringere la libera circolazione delle informazioni e di giornalisti indipendenti.
La formulazione di Seaman preoccupa noi giornalisti del settimanale “Vita”, e tutti coloro che hanno cuore lo sviluppo della democrazia e della pace in Medio Oriente.
Israele, infatti, è sempre più chiuso alle organizzazioni internazionali indipendenti; ad Amnesty International è stato negato l'accesso a Gaza il 9 maggio scorso, due pacifisti (Rachel Corey, Usa, e Tom Honland, GB) sono stati uccisi tra marzo e ad aprile travolti dai buldozer che distruggevano abitazioni dei palestinesi. Dal settembre 2000 ad oggi sono stati uccisi quattro giornalisti (tra cui anche il reporter italiano Raffaele Ciriello), l'ultimo il 3 maggio scorso (James Miller, giornalista inglese), e altri 53 sono stati feriti.

I Kamikaze e le autorità israeliane buggeerate
Ciò che stupisce è che le accuse siano state fatte per interposte persone e ad oltre un mese dagli stessi avvenimenti senza che a Francesca Ciarallo siano stati contestati i fatti in loco e verso di lei non sia stato preso nessun provvedimento da parte delle autorità israeliane.
D'altra parte, le stesse autorità israeliane, ben più avvedute di una reporter free lance, avrebbero dovuto ammettere di essere state buggerate almeno una decina di volte dai due terroristi. Secondo la ricostruzione della stessa polizia israeliana e dello Shin Bet, i due kamikaze britannici di origine pachistana– Asif Muhammad e Omar Khan Sharif, che il 12 aprile erano entrati in Israele dalla Giordania si sono sottoposti, nell'ordine:
- a controlli di sicurezza al Ponte di Allenby
- dal 15 al 20 aprile erano entrati e usciti più volte dai territori superando ogni più ferreo controllo israeliano (al valico di Erez, alla città di Rafah, al campo profughi di Khan Yunis)
- sono stati alloggiati al Ayarkon 48, ostello supersorvegliato e vigilato di Tel Aviv a due passi dal Mike's Place
Senza essere intercettati come terroristi.

Un'ultima precisazione in merito ai rapporti tra il settimanale Vita e Francesca Ciarallo che ha cominciato a collaborare con noi lo scorso anno come cooperante dell'associazione Giovanni XXIII. “I nostri inviati davvero speciali”, Vita il settimanale delle organizzazioni non profit italiane, spesso usa questa formula per pubblicare i diari e i reportage dei volontari italiani che nelle zone più a rischio del pianeta portano la solidarietà dell'Italia. Da Israele e dalla Palestina abbiamo in quest'ultimo anno pubblicato i diari e gli articoli, oltre che di Francesca Ciarallo dell'Associazione Giovanni XXIII, anche di Lisa Clark dei Beati i Costruttori di pace, di Carla Benelli di Crocevia, di Piera Redaelli di Terres des Hommes, di Liora Lopian dell'ong israeliana Taayush, di suor Sophie delle sorelle Vincenziane, di Ernesto Olivero del Sermig di Torino e decine d'altri.
Di Francesca Ciarallo abbiamo pubblicato un diario in quattro puntate tra il marzo e l'aprile del 2002. Avevamo chiesto un accredito come settimanale nell'aprile 2003, essendogli scaduto il visto come volontaria internazionale, per un reportage sui bambini nei terriori occupati e sull'ospedale psichiatrico di Gaza. Reportage che abbiamo poi pubblicato.

Giornalismo spazzatura
Per le ragioni sopra indicate il settimanale Vita ha dato mandato ai propri legali per querelare il quotidiano Libero che oggi pubblica in prima pagina un classico esempio di giornalismo spazzatura dal titolo: “Pacifisti e kamikaze, amici per caso?”

In merito alle dichiarazioni apparse sui quotidiani Haaretz e Maariv e
sull'agenzia Ansa su un mio presunto trasporto automobilistico di
due kamikaze, desidero precisare quanto segue, scrive Francesca Ciarallo:

1) Sul territorio israeliano non ho mai posseduto una macchina, ne'
utilizzato autovetture altrui, non ho neppure una patente valida in
Israele. Per i miei spostamenti mi sono sempre avvalsa di taxi o mezzi
pubblici. Pertanto non ho mai trasportato nessuno, ne' tantomeno i due
terroristi in questione, e non vedo come avrei potuto trasportare altre
persone quando io stessa ho dovuto fare ricorso ad altri mezzi di
trasporto.
Tengo inoltre a precisare che quando si oltrepassa il valico di frontiera
di Eretz, il confine tra lo stato di Israele e la Striscia di Gaza, le
autorita' di frontiera ritirano il passaporto, timbrano il visto e
registrano il giorno e l'ora di entrata e uscita. Per qualsiasi
giornalista serio non ci dovrebbero essere troppe difficolta' a fare un
controllo e verificare se io o qualcun altro ha mai oltrepassato quel
posto di blocco con i due kamikaze in questione.

2) Non sono mai stata espulsa dallo stato di Israele, ma sono rientrata in
Italia di mia spontanea volonta', senza che le autorita' aeroportuali
israeliane o italiane mi abbiano contestato alcuna irregolarita'. Durante
la mia permanenza il Israele non sono mai stata arrestata, fermata e non
mi e' mai stato contestato alcunche'.

3) La mia collaborazione con il settimanale "Vita" riguarda la
realizzazione di un articolo sul centro di salute mentale di Gaza, che si
occupa dei traumi infantili. L'articolo e' stato regolarmente
commissionato, redatto e pubblicato.

4) I due kamikaze, cittadini inglesi con regolare passaporto britannico,
hanno scorrazzato liberamente Israele e nei Territori Occupati,
compromettendo il lavoro e l'incolumita' di tutte le persone a cui si sono
avvicinati, tra cui molti giornalisti freelance e gli operatori delle
organizzazioni di volontariato internazionali, palestinesi e israeliane.
Questi attentatori sono entrati in contatto con molte persone, compresi i
soldati che li hanno autorizzati ad attraversare i posti di controllo in
virtu' del loro passaporto. Mi sembra quantomeno strano, per non dire
strumentale, che la stampa italiana e internazionale costruisca un caso su
chi, per pochi momenti e all'interno di iniziative pubbliche, ha avuto la
sventura di essere presente nella stessa manifestazione con due criminali.

5) Varie persone che avevano informazioni sui due criminali in questione
(me compresa) hanno gia' tempestivamente e volontariamente presentato
delle memorie alle istituzioni competenti, in Italia e in Israele, per
facilitare il lavoro di indagine. Io personalmente ho ricevuto i
ringraziamenti delle autorita' israeliane per la collaborazione prestata.
In seguito la correttezza e il senso civico ci hanno spinto a rinunciare
ad un facile "scoop", che avrebbe potuto compromettere l'attivita'
investigativa. Cio' nonostante altre persone, a distanza di
parecchi giorni dai fatti, hanno ritenuto opportuno divulgare queste
informazioni, peraltro in maniera distorta.

6) Mi spiace constatare come il sensazionalismo abbia il potere di
trasformare la rinuncia ad uno scoop, fatta per senso di responsabilita'
civica, in un indimostrabile atteggiamento omertoso. Niente di piu' lontano
dalla realta' delle cose.
Questo non aiuta l'informazione corretta, ostacola la lotta al terrorismo e
pregiudica la mia sicurezza, la mia reputazione, la mia professionalita' e
le mie future opportunita' di lavoro.

7) Colgo l'occasione per smentire tutte le affermazioni a me attribuite
dall'agenzia di stampa Ansa e dai quotidiani Haaretz e Maariv e mi riservo
di valutare l'opportunita' di un'azione legale contro chi ha diffuso
informazioni false sul mio conto.
