Freedom Of Speech? | ||
by natalie Tuesday, Aug. 07, 2001 at 4:24 PM | mail:
Not only have the polie shown violence but they are also trying to silence the true voice of the media. The truth will come out even if travesties occur. The public has the right to know what is going on. This has proven there is no freedom of the press. I would like to thank indy meida for doing such a great help covering the G8, it's hard to find out what's really going on with the the corupt super news station. Keep on fighting for equality and for all the people that wish they were there. I have decided to wear red for as long as I can to remember the death of the prostester, it might not be much but it's a start to raise awarness of what's happening to the world. |

I'm a bit confused. The man who got shot in the head was attacking an armed cop. When that happened i was a little sickened but to an extent he brought it on himself. But before i get mildly outraged at the raid, was this to STOP them from reporting? Christ that's a lot worse than shooting a rioter. This wasn't at all provoked. |

If this was El Salvador, Chile, or Cincinati there would be much more state retribution; those who engage in the overthrow of the "State" must realize that these tactics are insufficient in dealing with an superior opponent. Take a lesson from history, from 1776 untill today: to the hills and countrysides, arm yourselves, and begin the struggle accordingly leave these fat bastards until later... |

Freedom of the Press? | ||
by Jason d'Eon Monday, Jul. 23, 2001 at 10:28 AM | mail: jp_deon@alcor.concordia.ca
This organized and yet irrational assault by the police confirms many aspects about the democracy found in our present media. We see the appearance of an affiliated set of corporate-media with an analogous mediations. In peaceful times the media that differ from the mainstream, as Indymedia does, are subjected to democratic forms of quasi-censorship such as ridiculing, contradicting, fabricating news regarding them as illegitimate, etc. However, what we see as the outcome the Carabinieri attack on the Indymedia office represents a vicious tactic normally used by those who try to hide the truth. We really are in a world ruled by the elite oligarchy of the rich. The G8 say that they want to help the poor. So why are they placing fear in our hearts? Is Italy not a democratic state? Why was a man shot then run over as he lay dying? Why should we believe anything the leaders of the G8 say? Let us all listen to the corporate-media and hear what "righteous enlightenment" they have to affirm! Soon "they" shall be an "I" and the general public shall not whisper an objection. We defeated totalitarianism to see it rise from within. The attack on Indymedia is a symbol out of many that embodies this near future of ours. El Che, where are you when we need you to strike down those evil tentacles of Imperialism? |

when i see the violence and utter disregard for the rights of our brothers and sisters, i can some times feel discouraged. yet i remind myself what the future holds for us. the future is hope for the worlds poor and our enviroment. the future is an end to capitalism and hence finding ourselves trough relationships with people rather than things. and out of this will be a world born into a new age of spiritualality and love. so i remind everyone to keep on visioning our earth as the heaven it will become. ONLY LOVE CAN HEAL THE BEAST. |

Bush is smiling, making a point to assure everyone back home that all is going as planned, and that "(G8) has been a very productive meeting". Putin, Chrétien, most of all Bush, all the oligarchs are trying their best to make sure no-one knows that this is a people's movement. With a curious lack of restraint, they have been repeating over and over the mantra that these protestors do not represent the will of the people. Well, you G8 despoilers, let this ring loudly in your ears. |

by the wackness Tuesday, Jul. 24, 2001 at 12:53 PM | mail:
the american media is caught up in the disappearance of chandra levy. it makes the perfect story for the american population. it keeps everyone interested in this high profile disappearance because of the possible scandal envolving a united states senator. it also means that the news can report less about the happenings in genoa and focus more of their time on the levy case. if the truth and struggles of these people are going to be known, i think we have to become the media through any means. indymedia is doing a great job of this. without it, i wouldn't have any idea what's going on at the g8 meeting right now. i've been reading all the articles i can find online and then watching the news reports on the tv to see what they say about it. i heard about the protestor being shot and killed on tv 8 hours after i read it on indymedia. anoter example is the accounts of the imc raid. cnn said nothing more than "italian police entered an activist media outlet an seized metal pipes and baseball bats." it didn't mention anything about the multiple blood stains on walls caused by police beatings and the other events inside the imc building. this is a perfect time to exercise hacktivism. if you have any computer knowledge which puts you or others in a position to spread the details through websites (not necessarily your own :) ) by all means, do so. if you know someone who has such an ability and is willing to apply his or her knowledge, please encourage them to do so as well. i did what i could earlier. i posted the plea's for help from the italy.indymedia.org site onto what ever sites i could access. from there, it redirected to the indymedia page. do something constructive and bring this event to the attention of as many people as you can. if borrowing webpages for constructive purposes isn't your thing, copy stories, links, and pictures and mail them to everyone you know, post them on random message boards, or send it to your friends on AIM. there is soo much that we can do without being in genoa. |

SOLIDARITY | ||
by Bill Sunday, Jul. 22, 2001 at 12:29 PM | mail:
Greetings and solidarity from one who was a member of the Students for a Democratic Society in the the sixties and seventies!!! Your actions in Genoa are both inspiring and long awaited. The death of a comrade in the streets of Genoa made me remember immediately the deaths at Kent State so many years ago. The enemy then is the enemy now, the system that feeds on the blood of the young and the oppressed. Indy Media so reminds me of the Liberation New Service that we had back then and no wit suffers the same consequences. How many times LNS had their doors kicked in and files stolen. The anger and the hatred for this system still burns red hot in many of us who were active in the sixties/seventies and for what it is worth, I feel well represented by the youth that comprise the Black Bloc. Your actions are not without support here in the 'belly of the beast'. |

I'm awfulyl scared as to what this world is headed for. Those of us who have taken the time to read the history of the Bush family, know where they stand as far as 'freedom' & 'the New World Order' go. This is the type of treatment that will be going on all over the world if the Bushes and those who dream of total control have their way. They frighten the hell out of me. Nazi-ism is still alive and well. Hitler is smiling from hell. May those who are in control to diminish our freedoms burn in hell. Leaders of countries who condone this type of treatment should be ousted but the citizens of this world have no power over their hateful ways. May the Creator give to them, their just rewards. |

July 21 2001 will be remembered as the day when the corporate elites and their political lackies dropped the charade about freedom of expression and a free press. I have yet to hear commentary, let alone coverage, of this attack on independent media by media baron Burloscini's police in the mainstream media. Only ABC Radio National announced the attack this morning but by evening, ABC TV was silent on this important issue. This surely is an act of desparation by the dicredited power elites who have now turned to overt violence and intimidation to squash alternate ideas being expressed. The parallels between this and what has been happening in Zimbabwe are uncanny. This is surely the beginning of the end. |

did you notice that after the summit and the demonstrations, everyone had their share of fame? The "real" protesters, those who press said be pacific, were haunted by few anarchists; the eight leaders agreed that the poors of the world had to be helped; the large media said they worked in a riot environment and now people knew what being a journalist means... The police and the MILITARY organisation carabinieri delivered the images of the violence they have to suffer in order to keep citizens' security...The city of Genoa will now receive a refund of 20 millions $ (more or less) |

This weekend has made me feel very depressed. Two comrades have been killed, two more added to the list. I just feel like giving up on this movement. We'll never convince politicians to work towards a more harmonious, equitable, free and sustainable world. We'll never be able to destroy their war machines. What is the fucking point? Should we all try to crawl back into our mediocre existence and struggle on, because all this misery seems too much to bear? |

...i arrived from Genova this aftrenoon, and still feeling like awakening from a nightmare...but there's a bad taste in my mouth...something is changed in me, like i saw something i didn't want to see...i'm fucking scared. It's like nothing's gonna be the same any more from this point. I saw people arriving in our campus after demonstrations all three days, and it was just like looking to the faces of worriors coming from the battle they've lost. I refuse to see us as warriors and consider our longing for freedom as fight, war. I saw a war, blood, injustice, I've been there and i'm SICK OF IT...but i was a stupid beliving that there's a still a sign of humanity in those whashed up cups' brains (i mean, they are humans after all)...how STUPID...STUPID...STUPID i was. Brutal machinery of death and violence, that's what they are. And when it comes to Black Block (the one i saw in Genoa!)...they are no anarchists,these are bunch of frustrated teenagers (and as i've heard, infiltrated cups, provocators!!). I won't say anything on their attacks on banks, shop windows, but i hate how they bring into danger people on the streets (i'm talking not only of peacefull protestors with their white painted raised hands). Their rioting wasn't organised, there was no solidarity with other people, they would just appeared, threw some rocks, set some cars on fire and run away, leaving people smashed with teargass by cups. That's no anarchy if you ask me. |

by no name Sunday, Jul. 22, 2001 at 8:16 PM | mail:
i honestly feel sick each time i read about the police attacks against organizers. im also skeptical about whether the multivarious 'left' -- in all its diversity -- can withstand such violent and systematic efforts by the police state to eliminate us. WHAT CAN WE DO? WHAT MUST BE DONE? esp in DC during Sept? do 'we' have any means to communicate with each other? while i recognize that diversity is one strength, it also diversifies all groups, to the point where 'we' cant communicate with each other. i hope my statement is clear, because i'd really like to listen to others responses. |

sadness and anger | ||
by Tim (USA) Sunday, Jul. 22, 2001 at 8:52 PM | mail:
The events of the past several days show how thugs in both the Italian "security" apparatus, as well as the protesters, sullied the proceedings with carnage. Maybe now the G8 leaders will understand the heightened frustration of common folks at being left out of deliberations on the many facets of globalization, and that there are sociocultural facets of globalization, not merely economic ones. When I heard Bush smugly remark that the policemen and women in Italy had been put in place to guard "democratically-elected" leaders, I wondered whether he doesn't have a conscience, doesn't care, is brain-dead, or a little bit of all of these things. The arrogance and short-sightedness of my nation's leaders on issues such as small arms proliferation (re/the just-ended conference at the UN), "smart" sancitons against Iraq (thank God that failed!), ballistic missile "defense", Kyoto, the CTBT, u.s.w., is astounding. My heart goes out to the family of the young man who was murdered, along with all of the other innocent victims on ALL sides. Everyone, please pray and work for peace. Sometimes I'm ashamed to be a citizen of a country that people around the globe increasingly disrespect and loathe. But then I feel eternally greatful that the First Amendment to our nation's Constitution guarantees us the right to peaceably assemble, among other things. I sincerely hope that this occurs in the coming months in Qatar and other places where such diverse groups will converge. Peace everone. |

by holly Monday, Jul. 23, 2001 at 7:39 AM | mail:
The police only follow orders. We are being forced to "wake up" along with the mainstream! We must work in solidarity -- we must keep long-term objectives in mind -- we must know that if violence in the streets is not forthcoming, the police will invoke it -- through plants if need be. We must not be naive. This has been happening for hundreds of years in the U.S. & around the world. It is more sophisticated & better reported (thanks to an incredible source of media that has sprung up in less than two years). Remember what happened to Daniel Ellsburg when he released the Pentagon Papers in the U.S. THIS IS WAR. The enemy is NOT stupid -- ruthless, narcissistic, a little smug perhaps, but not stupid! Never underestimate the enemy! Don't give up the fight -- it is just beginning..... |

Facism is back and in all its most repressive reactionary forms since World War II where Mousilini and The Facist Party ruled with such repression of speach. The new elite global rulers are taking no chances that their pro-poverty, pro-privatisation, antienvironment, and antidemocratic agenda will be seen in the light of day by US citizens deluded with lies by the consolidated pro-corporate media. The raid on Indy Media in Genoa is proof that a FACIST GLOBALIZATION AGENDA is in progress curently in Italy; and don't fool yourself. smashed windows didnt provoke repression. real political power did (along with the success of the right in american politics). thousands of autonimous people in the streets of major city's all over the world for several years now is a threat to the state and the autoritarian left. The media and state has focused all of its pressure in an appearant crack in the left about property destruction. In america the lack of community orginization in allot of poor white areas makes this possible, as we don't seem to have contributed to the lives of real people and so arent relateable. Of course in the richest country in the world helping real people without useing the tools of capitalism is next to impossible. American counterterrorism is concentrateing it's defense against supposed domestic terrorism against what they call anarchists in order to squash the part of this movement that has the most potential to effect real change. And the authoritarian leftist cults like the ISO are right there to fuel the devide with dogma about anarchists bringing repression on themselves, and they will leave us in the streets to die. if you are a member of a group that is telling you that anarchists are agents provocatuers, please know that the movement is everywhere, much bigger than these demos suggest, much of it is very deep below the ground. beleive none of what you here and half of what you see. You are your only master. Revolution is not a game, be prepaired to hide everything and arm your friends. the mask is off and the people know what they want. we are attacking them from every direction at once and the parisite will be killed. from the most subtle social pressures to the most horrific acts of violence, I-cocroaches evolve! the future is here, who decides what it is, is the only question. We have allways been more wise than the adicted. stay in solidarity respect for those of your own heart is resect for yourself. counter-revolution is only a decision away allways. fight for your family and yourself, trust noone to do it for you or to lead you only you know you're best interest. become someone who can trust her own judgement. Life will prevail. prepaire to defend life with violence. return every blow now we have the power. the sun is on your back. |

Alright. We've seen what the capitalists and their guard wolves can do when they feel like making their point. Now I tihnk its time we show what we can do when we want to make a point. The internat. media has already branded anarchists & everyone like us criminals; we might as well start fighting back against these bastards. They have already killed Carlo Giuliani; how many more will die? We must take revenge, if only to show them we CAN fight back. These sonsofbitches are trampling the free world, and altho it goes against my pacifist instincts, i say the time for compromise is over. These pictures remind me of the last open radio operator out of Prague in '68, valiantly broadcasting despite the russians at the door. REFORM IS SHIT. PROPAGANDA OF THE DEED IS OUR ONLY OPTION. There are so many comments mentioning that there might be some sort of justification for the police brutality in Genoa. Please think about what your are saying. The "system" wants to divide us into good and bad protesters, while we are all together attacking the system with different means. But do you need more proof than given the last days for: where does violence come from? It is part of capitalism. You cant exploit, murder, destroy and repress without violence. The rage against this machine is more than understandable. What we need to learn is, that we need more strenghts to fight capitalism, we cant fight it on the streets forever. We need the organized workers to initiate mass strikes. And peaceful workers were attacked by the police as well, so i am sure it wont take long until they radicalize and take up the fight. |

WHO ARE THE VIOLENT ANARCHISTS?
by ACCESSTRUTH Monday, Jul. 23, 2001 at 5:26 PM | mail:
If the US Army can infiltrate CNN and manipulate news production, then they can also dress like anarchist protesters wearing masks and create chaos. This makes great TV coverage of violent protesters and gives the police reason for coming down on peaceful demonstrators forcefully. The Powers That Be are ruthless and will do whatever it takes to maintain their status quo and use whatever resources necessary to achieve their goals. They must be threatened by the people's movement if they have to destroy an independent media source to keep the truth from coming out. This is a WAR! A war between the people exercising their right to speak and be heard and their dictating rulers using the police to silence them in the streets with tear gas, rubber bullets, water cannons, and other military tactics. The police who are supposedly paid to protect and serve the public are only protecting the interests of Corporations and Politicians. Carlo Giuliani is a victim from the front lines of this War. He was gunned down in the streets in front of cameras and to cover up their violence, they attacked independent journalist and activist leaders. |

The accidental death of an activist
by Hector Ramírez Contreras Wednesday, Jul. 25, 2001 at 8:47 PM | mail:
There is no form to know it: Car it Giuliani it will happen to the forgetfulness in a matter of months or its death will be remembered like the one of the martyrs of Chicago, or both things, or no. The government of Silvio Berlusconi presents/displays it like an accident of the repression, the globalifóbicos hoist it as the test of the new global totalitarianism and the blood already were cleaned. The common sense of the power would indicate that the street displeasure cannot be fought to shots, that is less expensive - in political terms a descalabrado police that a dead demonstrator and that in the times that run the central virtue of any government is the containment. The detractors of the new world-wide disorder, on the other hand, will have to define themselves of hooligans. In the episode it has been able to find out itself that the movement of global resistance is a salad, also global, of malaises and disagreements that do not manage to determine if his main enemy is the minister of Economy of Germany, the antiriot body of the Italian police or a lettuce genetically modified; it does not know either clearly if their methods to resist the oprobiosa mundialización have to be the fire of the streets, the mobilization does not do violence to, the programming of code for Internet or the pacifist and vegetarian meditation. But the Group of the Eight (G-8) wins to him in confusion to its detractors. In his conformation there is logical criteria nor no coherence: the seven first members of the club are the government or Chiefs of State of the seven main national economies; the eighth, Russian president Vladimir Putin, does not represent the eighth economy, but the second nuclear arsenal of the world, yet and that is in declivity by the oxidation and the accelerated achatarramiento of the equipment. At the end of their meeting in Genoa, and after a dead, hundreds of hurt and several tons of tear gas, G-8 emitted a pink letter in which it offers to put itself to think a way to include to the civil society in the debates on globalización, promises alms of 53 million dollars for the poorest countries and anticipates the creation of a bottom - more substantial, that yes - to fight AIDS. In addition, the most powerful governors recommended the shipment to the Middle East of international observers, a healthful proposal for the mental health of the Israelis and for the physical subsistence of the Palestinians, but that already was vetoed by first and that she would have to be applied also - at sight of the disaster genovés- to same Italy and the successive encounter of G-8 in any point of the planet. The rest of the agenda gave rise to confrontations of clóset between the participants of the meeting. The globalifóbicos have all the political space of the world to generalize, specially now that the police of Berlusconi gave its first martyr to them, but is not the same the renano Capitalism of Schroeder who the texano Capitalism of George W. Bush; the presumed agreement on military toys between Washington and Moscow flock the discords of bottom between the respective governments, and the refusal of the first a to accept the Protocol of Kioto is a greater offense for its European political and economic allies. In the city that calls to each other the cradle of most outstanding (although unconscious) pioneering of the planetary globalidad, the accidental death of a globalifóbico activist reveals the limits and the contradictions of the many-colored movement of global resistance, and at the same time it has placed to G-8 in a paper tristísimo that reveals the impotence of the power: after vindicating their right of free meeting, as if they were beaten and repressed militant poor men, the government and Chiefs of State of the eight powers announce their decision to retire to deliberate in the semisecrecy of Kananaskis, a town of the Canadian province of Alberta. But nothing guarantees that the globalifóbicos do not reach them in that town whose precise geographic location is matter of specialists and that can well be described, consequently like ass of the world. |

Seeing this picture, in wich a strumentation for communication is underputted at a distruction in an action of "public order" take the contemporary political and social period at the beginning of the most terrible dictatures of our century, with the difference, very important for me, that at the start there was the idea of nation, and now of the globalization: a globalization where the leviatan is only one: the economic order in the monopolistic capitalism, whose presuppost is flessibility in the "civil" nations, and most powerty in the others. |

i was in Tuscany enjoying the scenery and wildlife when the G8 conference began. I was yet again disgusted at the actions of so called police. The violence of a small minority of people was used as an excuse by forces which are supposed to be protecting the citizen to carry out the dirty work of the G8 and probably various security agencies from the us and other nations. Sympathy to the young Italian mans family. I'm feeling guilty paying lip service from my arm chair, will people with real passion put themselves second. |

You people who are obsessing over the cop who shot the protester/rioter/whatever, i think you are just looking for something to pissed off about. It is sad, but you should think before you go with a group of people throwing a fire extinguisher (with other things too) into a police truck. The cop didnt have to shoot him square in the head, but it WAS out of self defense. Just becuase many cops abuse their powers doesnt mean you should attack all of them, especially if it is not organized. Even if you are an anarchist, it gets you nowhere, as we saw from what happened to Guiliani(sp?). If the cop is charged, and they find that he meant to shoot the protestor in the head, i hope he is convicted and pays. But if it was not on purpose, then why should he pay? He may be a very corrupt officer, but let him serve time for other crimes, not this one if death wasnt intended. Plus, a fire extinguisher to the head can kill too. |

I'm Italian and I'm 36. Never in my life have I witnessed such a horror. A totalitarian regime is not what you'd expect to rule a presumed-democratic member State of the European Union. The unlimited power conferred by the government to the police on the occasion of the pacific demonstrations in Genoa is a fascist attitude that no civil people in the world should ever accept. Too much blind violence against the innocent, too much pain, basic human rights utterly ignored. I've never felt represented by any Italian government in my life, but now it's different; now I'm scared. For me and for my children. |

To the protestors... The adage, "He that lives by the sword, dies by the sword" appears to have come at your own hands. After surveying the G8 damage, injuries, and one recorded death, it is obvious that the Italian military police targeted the violent protestors. Sure it was a planned assualt, but it was the same violent protestors who had previously attacked the police and authorities and were further more planning to undermine the G8 summit. |

The recent events in Genoa and the the resistance to the atrocities committed by the repressive state apparatus leave no doubt that what is always at stake is the question of obedience and the the imperative to unthink and outlast the tyranny of empire. Now as never before it is necessary to reforge solidarities with the poor of the world because it is in destitution and through the embracing of the lives of the destitute that there will be a chance for life to be reborn amidst the destructive characters that seek to police thought and its capacity to construct a world other than what it is. |

Thats the question I ask myself. Is it normal that people are doing things like this? Not only the italian police, but also that black block. You can't fight against authority, hierarchie, etc, when you do the same things as the police & Co. The only thing I want is peace, but you won't get that if you are fighting! I don't like people with power, who can decide about other peoples lifes, so I don't do the same thing. When the violence will go on like this, there won't be any G anymore, and than Bush could do what he wants , without the control of other countries. I don't like that neo-liberal capitalist shit, but we all have to be democratic and to respect other people! The only thing I want is peace and freedom! |
