why sit in front of the police, when you can hit the police?

Becuase then they'll have an excuse in the public mind and legal system to hit you back much harder, gas you, shoot you, and lock you up for years. Even if you yourself get away, they're likely to pick a scapegoat and prosecute him or her. Take a look at what happened a year ago in Philly, for which folks still have charges--they just picked folks and decided they were the ones who hit police.
