URGENT CALL TO PREVENT DEPORTATION!
Four international activists and four Israeli activists were arrested today while trying to stop bulldozers from uprooting trees in the West Bank village of Budrus. Budrus, together with the villages of Midya, N'ilin, and Kibiya, is about to be imprisoned by the wall from all directions. The four Israelis were released after they agreed not to enter the occupied territories for 14 days. The international activists, however, were transferred to Giv'at Zeev police station where some have already had their hearings with a representative from the Ministry of Interior regarding their deportation. Kate Raphael (from IWPS) had her hearing and they want to deport her. She will try any nonviolent measure to resist her deportation, and is counting on your support. Pressure on the ministry and the minister are crucial.
The four activists are: Frederick Batzler Katheryn Raphael Gustav Fridolin (Swedish member of parliament) Kimberley Anne Gray Please call the ministry of interior to protest at +972 (0) 2 670 1400 or fax at +972 (0) 25 666 376. Thank you for your support.

Swedish MP among eight internationals arrested in Budrus December 30, 2003 http://www.palestinemonitor.org/updates/swedish_mp_arrested.htm
Swedish MP Gustav Fridolin was among eight protestors arrested by Israeli troops this morning in another day of protests in the village of Budrus. About 50 Palestinians were also injured by soldiers who turned on the protestors, beating them with sticks and shooting rubber bullets and throwing tear gas on them.
Now aged 20, Fridolin is the youngest member ever to be elected to the Swedish parliament (was 19 when elected), and is a very high-profile figure. At the time of writing he remains in custody along with six other peace activists – another Swede, four Israeli and two Americans.
The eight were arrested during a second day of peaceful civil disobedience in Budrus where Israeli contractors, backed by troops, are attempting to to uproot olive trees to begin construction on a new section of the Separation Wall. If completed the wall will surround the village and destroy almost a quarter of the surrounding local farmland.
Following yesterday’s demonstrations, lots of Israeli soldiers were sent to Budrus to disperse any protests. The troops arrived this morning and sought to impose a curfew, which was ignored by locals and international activists who returned to the site of the wall’s construction.
The second Swede arrested, Frederic, spoke to Palestine Monitor from an Israeli jail inside the nearby settlement Bet Arye. He said that the soldiers had begun beating Palestinians and international demonstrators alike. “The reason we went out there was to join the peaceful resistance of the local villagers,” he said. “ It is our moral obligation to support these people through non-violent means.”

Subject: Media Alerts – Deportation orders issued against 4 peace activist, including Swedish MP Israeli interior ministry issued a deportation order against 4 peace activists. The two Swedes, members of ISM, MP Gustav Fridolin and Freidrek are currently held in Ariel settlement police station. IWPS activists Kate and Kim are held in an interior ministry detention center in Khadera. Back ground information: villagers from Budrus, and their Israeli and International supporters, made a peaceful march onto Budrus lands that are set to be destroyed for the construction of the Israeli Apartheid Wall. Protesters were met by the Israeli army who physically assaulted the men, women and children present and opened fire on the crowd with over 100 rubber bullets aimed at people's heads. Tear gas was also fired. There are many injuries and approximately 10 people have been taken to the hospital. At least 4 Israelis and 6 internationals have been detained and have been threatened with arrest. Gustav Fridolin, a Swedish member of parliament is among the group of detained protesters. Israeli protester Nimrod Kerreet has been badly beaten.
Curfew was then imposed on the village, but protesters decided to continue their peace presence on their land and were met with continued violence. If this phase of the Wall construction is allowed to continue, Budrus will be largely surrounded by it and rendered an enclave without the necessary services for survival. The villagers have been peacefully resisting the advance of the wall on their land for over one month and plan to continue their non- violent civil disobedience campaign against it.
Among the protesters were Israelis from the Anarchists Against Walls group that participated in the non-violent demonstration at Masha on December 26. It was during this demonstration that Israeli activist Gil Na'amati (22), was shot with two live bullets in both legs and badly injured. An American member of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) was also injured by a bullet. Internationals present today were from the ISM and International Women's Peace Service (IWPS).
Currently, the village of Budrus is under curfew and the Israeli army has occupied at least one home. Gustav Fridolin along with one other Swedish activist and two American activists are being detained at the Bet Arye police station.

Fadi Abu Sada for PNN
31 December 2003
Palestine News Network received a phone call from one of the international activists arrested today in the West Bank demonstration against the illegal Israeli Closure Wall. She is currently being held in an Israeli police station, built inside one of the settlements near Bodros Village, northwest of Ramallah.
She told PNN that the Israelis are dealing with the activists in a rough manner, and have confiscated their passports. The activists are not being given any information as to what the Israelis plan to do to them.
She added, "We believe that what we are doing is a part of the Palestinian peaceful and human resistance against the Wall that Israel is building on the Palestinian land." She continued, "We are not going to stop our mission no matter what the Israelis will do to us."
It was clear that this woman was not afraid at all, but rather the opposite. She said, "We are just thinking now where we will end up spending the New Year!"

IOF Arrests Swedish MP in West Bank as Israel Fires at Protestors http://www.ipc.gov.ps/ipc_e/ipc_e-1/e_News/news2003/2003-12/124.html
RAMALLAH, Palestine, December 31, 2003 (IPC + Agencies) - - The Israeli occupying forces arrested today a Swedish member of Parliament in the village of Budrus as they fired tear gas canisters and rubber-coated bullets at a protest against the Apartheid Wall, protestors said.
Gustav Fridolin was one of a group of around 10 protestors arrested near the village of Budrus, west of Ramallah City, spokesmen for the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) and the International Women's Peace Service said.
The occupying troops had opened fire with rubber-coated bullets during the protest, which comes five days after an Israeli protester was shot with live bullets in the leg during a similar demonstration against the wall.
Anna Weekes, a protestor from South Africa, said that Fridolin had been detained by soldiers as he sang pro-Palestine songs with a group of local schoolchildren, AP reported.
"We were sitting on a terrace singing 'Free, Free Palestine'. Then they grabbed various internationals," she said. "They have taken him and the others away to a detention center."
Weekes said that four international peace activists, including Fridolin, plus three Israelis had been detained.
The activists added that one Israeli, Nimrod Kerreet, had been beaten by the Israeli soldiers who were trying to arrest him.
Ealier, nearly 40 people, including Palestinian citizens and international peace activists, were wounded by IOF gunfire at the same demonstration in the village of Budrus, as they were protesting the annexation of vast area of the village most arable lands for the construction of the Apartheid wall.
Fridolin serves also as deputy member of Advisory Committee on EU Affairs, as well as deputy member of the Committee on Defense in the Swedish Parliament. He was born on 1983.

URGENT CALL TO PREVENT DEPORTATION! http://www.ektaonline.org/~quitpale/
Bay Area peace activist Kate Raphael, and three other internationals were arrested yesterday in the West Bank village of Budrus and are facing imminent deportation. The activists from the International Women's Peace Service and International Solidarity Movement were participating with the Budrus community and Israeli peace activists in a demonstration intended to stop Israel from uprooting trees belonging to the village to clear the land for construction of the Apartheid Wall.
Israel has issued deportation orders against the four internationals. Swedish Member of Parliament Gustav Fridolin was expected to leave Israel/ Palestine voluntarily today. Another Swede, ISM activist Freidrek Batzler, is being held in the Ariel settlement police station, and IWPS activists Kate Raphael and Kimberly Gray are in an interior ministry detention center in Khadera. Kate has pledged to resist deportation by any possible nonviolent means and is counting on international support so that she may continue her valuable work in Palestine.
The Wall is slated to surround Budrus, cutting it off from services necessary for survival. The villagers have been peacefully resisting the advance of the wall on their land for over a month, and December 29 and 30 marches involving villagers, internationals and Israelis succeeding in turning away Israeli soldiers from the site Israel intends to clear.
When the villagers and their international and Israeli supporters returned on December 31, the Israeli army opened fire with rubber bullets and tear gas and beat demonstrators, resulting in at least ten people being hospitalized.
Four Israelis and five Palestinians were also arrested. Israel then slapped a curfew on the village. Despite this and continued IDF violence, Palestinians, Israelis and internationals have continued their peace presence. Israeli police say they are increasingly concerned at the involvement of foreign nationals in the protests against the Wall.
Please call the Ministry of the Interior to demand that the deportation orders for Kate Raphael and Kimberly Gray be rescinded. The activists have not received due process under Israeli law and may be deported as soon as this Sunday. Both have been living in the West Bank, involved in valuable nonviolent solidarity and educational work. Call: At the Ministry of the Interior, Raz Godelnik or his secretary, Dorit: 011 972 2 670 1400. (Note: It is ten hours later in Israel and the Israeli weekend is Friday and Saturday.)
To donate for Kate and Kim's legal fund: International Women's Peace Service 2018 Shattuck Avenue, PMB 122 Berkeley, CA 94704
