UN Official Rebuilding Jenin Shot Dead by Israelis

JENIN, West Bank (PC) - The Israeli army invaded the refugee camp of Jenin again, and in clashes with young people throwing stones, the Israeli army responded with gunfire.

But instead of hitting their targets, they struck a UN official, killing him instantly.








The man who is identified by Jenin hospital officials at Ian Johnhawk, oversaw the building of homes in the war-battered Jenin refugee camp.

According to the Director of Jenin’s hospital, Mohammed Abu Ghali, the man was shot in the abdomen twice by Israeli soldiers, as they shot at stone-throwing youth. Due to the heavy firing, the ambulance was delayed by more than an hour. By the time Johnhawk reached the hospital, he was proclaimed dead.

The Jenin refugee camp, which is know among Palestinians as a “haven of resistance” and among Israelis as a “bee hive for terrorists” has been subject to brutal Israeli invasions which have claimed the lives of scores since the outbreak of the Palestinian Uprising two years ago.

In April of 2002, the Israeli army invaded Jenin and carried out many acts that were defined by groups such as Amnesty International as “war crimes”. According to scores of eyewitness accounts from residents of the refugee camp, the army carried out several extra-judicial assassinations, forced residents to act as human shields and demolished hundreds of homes.

The Israeli army has made no formal statement regarding the killing of Johnhawk.
