Objects and clothes from the DIAZ SCHOOL benefit auction for prisoners / legal expenses
Everyone remembers what happened in July in Genoa; in particular we all saw the images of the disaster left by the police following the raid at the Diaz school. Thereafter, upon proposal by those who were in Genoa and as agreed by those involved, it was decided that whatever was left behind after the arrests should not go lost, and that those who were put in jail should have a chance to get back whatever they were forced to leave at the school and which had not been destroyed.
A situation was needed to organise – logistically, technically and humanly – the collection and sorting of clothes, rucksacks, tents, sleeping bags, cameras, glasses, keys, wallets, books and personal belongings which had to be taken out from the school before the institutions made rubbish of them. That is how, from Genoa to Turin, here at El Paso, we spent over two months first piling up the stuff in the concert hall (so that it could be displayed to people traced), then getting rid of things which could no longer be useful and sorting things according to type and nature.
In the meantime, and in co-operation with other movement structures, we spread the news that the material left behind had been collected here. Thereafter dozens of people wrote, phoned and came here to recover their own stuff. From New Zealand to Northern Europe we made dozens of shipments which heartened up people who, in that (terrible) situation, experienced the violence of the State under all its aspects. People were more than happy to recover objects they cared for. And they were happy to see that even in such circumstances things were well organised even if no plan was made ahead.
Well, a good deal of the material went back home, but much is still here. Four months have passed. We do not think there are still people who could have their stuff back and have not yet got in touch with us or any of the many people and structures – in Italy and abroad – with whom we have been in contact since then. Shall we throw it all away? No. We decided to organise an auction sale of all that was left over and then use the money raised to help those who are still in jail or those who have been and will be taken to court. Therefore, Friday 9th November, with the help of different characters acting as 'auctioneers', you will have a chance to help those who are in trouble and at the same time take home something useful, as if you were at the Balon (the local flee market).
Call in.
